Author:Art Spiegelman
Maus was my first graphic novel - or "comic book" style novel. At 200-ish pages it flew by, and I'm not sure how much of that was because of the easy format or how much was the story itself.

In the story, the author portrays himself writing the story of his father who was an imprisoned Jew in various camps during WWII. The book is mostly flashback, hilighting the fathers story of Nazi regime but does flash to the "current" and hints (not so subtly) at residual issues.

The book itself is amazing, with Jewish mice, German cats, and Polish pigs. The dialogue is fantastic... I could hear the slang, it was written so well. The story pulls in different directions, and the underlying details get at the things we don't often hear about will holocaust survivors.

When you first mentioned this to me, it almost rang a bell. Now that I see the cover work, I remember having seen this around the comic stores. Four stars, huh?

This was also my first graphic novel. The illustrations brought to life the feelings of fear, resentment and racism in a way I had never seen before. There is a darkness underlying the human mind, and Art Spiegelman portrays that through the tale of one man's experience of the Holocaust.
